Clearfield 31 – Hunter 24, D1 Players & Game Summary

Clearfield Head Football Coach, Andre Dyson, had a win for the ages.  Possibly the biggest Clearfield win in the past decade.  A 31-24 double overtime victory, at powerhouse Hunter High School, in West Valley City, Utah. When I caught up with Coach Dyson, his team was still celebrating with fans, while he was still taking in the moment.  “Huge win for our program”…”Big, big, big, huge”, Coach Dyson said, as he looked up; being proud of his team.

I’ve personally witnessed the hard work that Coach Dyson has put in.  His players have bought in, and Clearfield is poised for a breakout season.

Here are the players that stood out:

QB Jaxon Mansfield (2018)  – The crafty QB put together one of the most impressive opening game performances of the week.  He constantly eluded Hunter’s fierce pass rush, as he scrambled out of the pocket throwing, and running for big time yardage.  He looked like Johnny Manziel, during his A&M days. Keep up the good work young man.

LB/TE/K – Colton Manning (2018) – Manning made game changing plays on offense, defense, and also in the kicking game.  He is the heart and sole of the Clearfield team, and played every rep in today’s game.  He was making monstrous hits on defense, great catches on offense, and even nailed a 37 yard FG, to send the game to double overtime. He does it all, and is a big reason why Clearfield pulled off the upset today.

WR Justin Brown (2018) – I’m not sure how many people knew of Brown before the game.  I’m quite confident the entire stadium knew about him after the game, as he made multiple big plays throughout the game.  He has definitely caught my attention.

RB Isaiah Lunde (2018) – Lunde gave Clearfield a solid running game throughout the night.  He was quick and explosive.  It also came to my attending that Lunde was playing injured.  Regardless he looked like an interesting RB prospect.

RB/DB Pailate Makakona (2018) –  Makakona single handily put Hunter on his back, while leading a vicious second half comeback, with multiple big runs.  He was spinning, juking, stiff arming, and rumbling down the sidelines, as the crowd went nuts.  Makakona established himself today as one of the top players in the city area, and possibly in the state.  If he continues playing at this high level; he will receive some good offers.

LB Heamasi Lutui (2019) – Lutui was solid in today’s game.  He made multiple big plays on D.  He’s one of the main leaders on Hunter’s defense.   I really liked what I saw from him.  He’s on the D1 radar.

OL/DL Manu Tupuola (2019) – The big man from Hunter played a solid game up front.  He’s poised to be one of the big names in the 2019 recruiting class.

OL/DL Ate Kioa (2019) – It’s not easy watching the guys up front, from the stands, but Kioa stood out, as he helped open multiple holes for the running game.  I’m looking forward to watching more film on him.

OL/DL Atelea Tahi (2018) – Tahi had a solid night up front.  Overtime I looked at the line, he was active and physical.  I like what he brings to the table. He’s someone we will be watching closely.
