2018 D1 Sleepers – DB’s (Top 10)

We combined the safeties and corners for the simple fact that many these players will be interchangeable at the next level.  Here’s the top 10 sleepers for the DB position:

D1 FCS Sleepers

No. 10: Garrett Rusick (Skyridge HS) 6’2″ 180 lbs

Rusick had a breakout football season.  He seemed to be in the right place, at the right time, which helped him come up with quite a few INT’s.  We enjoyed watching this young man play.  He’s a FCS sleeper.

No. 9: William Overstreet (Lehi HS) 5’9″ 170 lbs

Overstreet is an exceptional player, who is not even close to reaching his potential.  He also seems to be a natural leader on defense.  We believe Overstreet would be a great contributor on the D1 FCS level.

No. 8: Darian Strate (Herriman HS) 6’2″ 185 lbs

Strate is another talent that hardly gets the recognition that he deserves. He is a gifted player.  His coverage skills are as good as anyone that we’ve seen this year.  We’ve had the opportunity to evaluate him a few times, and are convinced that he’s a D1 – FCS sleeper.

No. 7: Isi Leakehe (Herriman HS) 6’0″ 180 lbs

Leakehe is one of the most gifted athletes in the state.  He’s tall, long, and fast; to go along with great instincts.  Leakehe plays both sides of the ball, and can play WR or DB at the next level.  He’s also a talented basketball player.  Leakehe is a D1 – FCS sleeper.

No. 6: Alex Palmer (Skyridge HS) 6’0″ 180 lbs

Palmer is one of the best players, that you’ve hardly heard of.  He’s a big reason for the success that Skyridge had.  Palmer played on both sides of the ball and dominated. He’s a D1 talent that should be heavily recruited.  Schools are really overlooking this young man.

No. 5: Conor Ebeling (Corner Canyon) 6’2″ 180 lbs

Ebeling is a well known kicker.  He’s also a legit D1 safety prospect.  This young man has a knack for the ball and makes plays. Ebeling brings plenty to the table, because of his combined skills at DB and kicking.  It’s hard to find players with this unique talent. He’s a big time sleeper.

D1 FBS Sleepers

No. 4: Sam Westfall (Dixie HS) 5’11” 175 lbs

Westfall is a great athlete and a natural competitor.  We love what he brings to the table.  He doesn’t back down to challenges and wants to go up against the very best, with the belief that he will shut them down.  He has the right DB mentality, to go along with his skills.  He’s a D1 – FBS talent.

No. 3: Kobi Matagi (Bingham HS) 6’2″ 180 lbs

Matagi is one of the biggest sleepers in the state of Utah. He’s a player that can play safety or LB at the next level.  We envision him starting out at strong safety. It will be interesting to see which FBS schools make a last minute push to sign him.

No. 2: Tyson Herrera (Herriman HS) 5’10” 170 lbs

Herrera is a gifted player, and one of the top high school DB’s that we’ve evaluated in quite some time.  Herrera can play corner or safety at the next level.  He would be a natural fit in a nickel or dime package as well.  He’s a natural in coverage, and a punishing hitter.  We’ve had the opportunity to evaluate Herrera multiple times, and have left D1 FBS coaches with this advice: “Offer him.”

No. 1: Jaylon Vickers (East HS) 5’10” 180 lbs

We rated Vickers as a D1 caliber athlete last April, and he has only raised his stock.  Vickers flourished this past season, and proved that is arguably the top DB in the state of Utah.  He consistently made big plays, against top level talent. Former NFL player and D1 coach Andre Dyson evaluated Jaylon, and said that he is definitely a D1 FBS talent. Vickers is a major D1 sleeper.
